How to Prepare for Your First Adventure Holiday

Gone are the days of lazing on beaches and indulging in resort buffets. There’s a fire in our souls, and adventure in our bellies — we want holidays that set our adrenaline racing.

Over-tourism has rocketed demand for off-the-beaten-track experiences, which is amazing for our storytelling status but tricky on logistics. Packing for a trek through the Amazon is different from throwing together a checked bag for a weekend by a pool. Adventure vacations are all the rage, but they do require some extra steps. Here’s how to prepare for your holiday of a lifetime.

 1. Get Physically Ready for Your Adventure

Turning your hand to something physically demanding? Perhaps you’re climbing Kilimajaro? Or maybe you’re going skiing across the remote tundra of Lapland, not serene French slopes. With holidays becoming increasingly challenging, physical conditioning is becoming equally important.

A hiking or trekking adventure demands adequate endurance. Don’t go hiking to Machu Picchu without investing in some cardio exercise a few months beforehand. Similarly, strength training is beneficial for skiing or carrying large bags.

 2. Pack Smart: What to Bring and What to Leave Behind

Adventure holidays cross different terrains and demanding climates. Always pack with your planned activities in mind, and invest in correct (and durable) equipment. Every item should justify its place, especially if you’re carrying it on a thru-trail or something similar. Research quality before purchasing new clothing and equipment.

Similarly, try everything on to ensure it fits and will actually be worn.

Travelers are increasingly staying away longer, so versatility requirements are also shifting. What could once be piled into a single check-in bag might now require a space-saving solution — and proper planning.

 3. Understand the Risks and Safety Precautions

An adventure holiday might be exciting, but that flutter of adrenaline comes with risks. Whether you’re whitewater rafting, mountaineering, or bungee-jumping, there are safety precautions to keep in mind.

Thoroughly research companies before booking, and be sure to revise any information they’ve provided ahead of your experience. Check destination-specific guidance, too. For instance, the correct emergency protocol for tsunamis in Thailand or avalanches in the Alps.

As a traveler, it’s also important to prepare your packing. Take a short first aid course if necessary, and bring all the essentials with you. And while you already know the importance of purchasing travel insurance, take things one step further: read the fine print. Some adventure activities will void your cover. Pay attention to the fine details, and you’ll avoid any nasty surprises.

Preparing for an adventure holiday is no mean feat, but then again, you’re not seeking an “ordinary” vacation. Fortunately, all that extra planning is just part of the excitement!
