Bunking at the family friendly A&O Hostel in Vienna

It was our first time staying at a hostel with a toddler and when we arrived at the A&O hostel we were pleasantly surprised it was child friendly.  No longer hard core backpackers, we opted for a private room with ensuite.

The rooms resembled a mini Ikea and were pretty small for a family of three, only just big enough to squeeze in Jack’s travel cot.  As a hostel they were also basic, consisting of two twin beds, side tables, a small desk and a little coat stand.  The bathroom too was very compact, but did the job.  There was a small box TV on the wall, but it didn’t work.

The staff were all very friendly and were happy to assist with any enquiries.  On the first day they provided us with optional lunch packs which were great for those on a budget.  A buffet breakfast is also available as well as some snacks in the communal lounge area.

Wi-Fi was free in the rooms and public areas once you register and it is extremely fast.  You could also purchase a faster speed line if you required, but for general internet use and skype, the free option was perfectly adequate. There are also several computers available, a kids play area and a pool table to keep you entertained when you are not sightseeing.

Positives:

The hostel is extremely clean, it’s quiet and there are plenty of facilities suitable for both family and solo travellers.

Negatives:

Twin room was possibly a bit too small for a family, but ok for a couple of nights.  It was also border line too far from the city centre.

Kid Friendly:

There is a small play area in the communal lounge as well as a larger one in the breakfast room.  Ideal if it is a wet or you want to hang out at the hostel to have a break from travelling.
