For our second month in Chiang Mai we really wanted to move into the Old Town in the heart of all the action. After scoping out a few places on the East side, we settled on CM Apartment located down the small street of Soi 7 Moon Muang Road. The location, the light, clean rooms and the price sold us and we weren’t disappointed.
The best quality to price ratio in Chiang Mai
CM Apartment Chiang Mai offer short or long term stay with a room for a month costing us 7,000 THB ($AU230) + electricity. This was far cheaper than some of the rooms we saw which were quite similar, but costing a minimum of 18,000THB ($AU600). The rooms are not overly big and don’t have a lounge area like our last home, but the location was great for us, central to everything we wanted to see and do. There are plenty of restaurants and cafe’s (both targeting tourists and locals) within walking distance and a local market around the corner. Tuk Tuks and Song Teows are always gathering out at the end of the street if you need a ride anywhere.
For a one month stay the room was big enough…just
Our room was located on the 4th floor and with no lift we had a good glute workout several times a day walking up the stairs. If you have little ones or lots of luggage, you might like to look at a room on the lower levels. An all white interior makes the room initially feel spacious, but they are quite small for 3 people and for a long stay. Perfectly adequate however, if you were staying for a short period or were without a child. It consisted of a comfortable bed, side tables, a grandpa armchair and a desk with adjoining cupboard space. What was a balcony, has been turned into an open air bathroom which was cleaver in regards to space and very pleasant. There are some nice attention to details and it was one of the nicest bathrooms we have had so far.
The rooms are light and airy, but they do get quite hot so the air condition was consistently being turned on (and off to save on power and money!). Each room had a sliding door out onto the balcony where you can enjoy the ventilation, but the main window opened onto the hall and if your positioned at the top of the stairs like we are, you might find nosey guests looking into your digs. Not for me so the blind remanded closed the majority of the time.
The facilities are brilliant
The lack of space in the room and no balcony was made up by the communal areas within the buildings. There is an intimate lounge area located on level 2 and plenty of seating and tables at the entrance of the building. Both areas are undercover outdoor and remain quite cool on the hot days. Generally we found we had these areas to ourselves on most occasions. It is though, so close to great cafe’s and restaurants, so if you want to have some space to chill out and take a break from sightseeing there many places you can escape to.
The building was well looked after and included in our monthly package was an apartment clean and linen change over once a week. There are coin laundry facilities available in the carport or several laundry services within a few meters charging 30TBH per kilo to wash and dry your clothes for you.
There is cable TV and WiFi in all the rooms, although on level 4 it is a little sensitive (perhaps another reason to request a room on the lower floors). WiFi in the communal areas is great though – if you do stay at the CM Apartment Chiang Mai, for best WiFi sit under the modem in the outdoor seating area of the entrance. Perfect for Skype too.
There is plenty of undercover parking for pushbikes and motorcycles which seems to be completely safe. We often left our bikes unlocked and always left our pram in the carport with no trouble. During the evening, the apartment building is maned by a security guard and although we didn’t see any reason for one, it was nice to know there was someone there if there was any trouble.
Great staff made us feel at home
The staff at CM Apartment were extremely friendly and welcoming. They all took a liking to Jack and he loved seeing the staff’s children playing in the building after school hours. We also enjoyed being entertained by one of the guys who would be blow drying his hair while manning the front desk or watching his Thai Soapies on his i-Pad. He would either be singing to the theme song, crying at obviously sad moments or at the edge of his seat in excitement. Believe me, it was very entertaining!
We would highly recommend the CM Apartment Chiang Mai for a long or short stay. Although as a family, one month was probably long enough staying in a room of that size. If you are a family and wanting to stay for an extended period, perhaps ask if their two bedroom apartment is available. This is often occupied by a long term tenant, but you may be in luck! As mentioned it is central, the rooms are well presented and it is very well priced suiting most budgets. A great place to stay in Chiang Mai.
